How long have you been in your industry?45 years
Why did you choose your industry?I enjoyed being outside and the idea of a desk job was abhorrent. I saw that it wasn't an industry that was going to disappear either.
Who are your typical clients? We deal almost exclusively with residential homeowners in the Greater Cincinnati and Norther Kentucky area.
What do you like best about being in this industry? We're making a difference in the environment by promoting chemical free, pollinator friendly landscapes. Working with the natural world is always a challenge but thats part of the fun.
What are common problems you see?Too many people who really don't know much about what they're doing can easily start a landscape business. Their lack of knowledge can give the industry a bad reputation.
What advice/tips do you have for clients? They should hire professionals with experience, education, etc as opposed to buying on price alone.
When is your busy season?March through December but its becoming more and more year-round
What keeps you up at night?Making sure we have an adequate (3 month) backlog of work.
How do you market yourself to grow/expand your business? We market directly to the neighborhoods and homes where we want to work. Hand-written letters are usually opened. The personal touch starts what we hope will be a long-term relationship.
How involved are you in the community? We install and maintain public garden spaces, provide hundreds of hours yearly to local and national parks in removing invasive plants, hold positions on several local non-profit boards that support inner city gardening programs and others that offer food and clothing assistance, serve on statewide boards that promote senior health, serve on local community boards that promote resident needs and small business activity, etc.
What is your favorite not for profit or charity?Too hard to list one but we have worked with local schools, churches, etc that serve the disadvantaged in our community.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of getting into this business?Identify your ideal client. Don't try to be the lowest bidder. Offer quality services starting with prompt responses to the initial call, setting upfront contracts on how you operate and what the prospect can expect, be timely in all communications/appointments/scheduling, and be pro-active in addressing any issues. Ste yourself apart in an industry that is easy to enter. Be the best!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I am an avid cyclist. I ride about 12-13,000 miles per year and race about 20-30 times per year on a local, state and national level. I'm also a USA Cycling Level 1 coach and certified personal trainer. I've taught over 3500 classes over the last 17 years. I also devote 500+ hours to local and national parks on backcountry maintenance. I also play drums in a local band. And, I enjoy gardening and photography. I stay busy!
